The 'Terra' (Earth) Tile

2020 First Release

Our new 2020 Special Edition First Reissue tile will be made available the day after Thanksgiving, 2019.  This beautiful glazed large 7 1/4" x 6" tile is  Hand crafted, the tile is made from local Bucks County clay that we dig and mix ourselves.  Due to it's being made by hand every tile is different.

For this design of circa 1900, Henry Mercer made a casting from an early 17th-century stove tile provided by Joseph G. Willman, a local painter and member of the informal group of artists know as the ’scumblers’ who met in Edison, PA. Willman found the original tile at Singen, a German city just north of the Swiss border. Part of the allegorical series depicting the elements, the personification of Terra sits beneath an elaborate, Renaissance style canopy holding bird-bearing cherubs.

This design, directly derived from an engraving by Crispijn De Passe, was created by Georg Vest—an oven tile maker active in Nuremberg, Germany during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Mercer offered this tile in his 1901 catalogue as tile #56.

In lieu of a newly designed Special Edition tile, this year’s tile is a re-release of Henry Mercer’s reproduction of this design that he created in the early 1900’s. Until the end of 2020 the funds obtained from the sale of this specific tile will go towards the restoration of the Tile Works. This nominal 7”x6”tile will be available for purchase the day after Thanksgiving for $39.95 Members receive a 10% discount. These tiles will have a unique stamp designating them as a ‘First Reissue’ until the end of 2020.
